Thrifting the Trends: Oversized Nautical Sweater & Silk Pants

Oversized sweaters are a pretty casual look. A nice roomy sweater gives you the comfort of pajamas without the stigma of wearing them in public. That being said, it's totally possible to dress this trend up. The key is to counter the casual chunkiness of the sweater with a sumptuous luxury fabric, such as silk, satin or chiffon.

By the way, mixing casual with formal is an easy way to make an outfit look more creative. And frankly, it's a good reason to actually buy that party dress or satin pants you might find while thrifting but have no idea where you'll wear it. Pair it with an oversized sweater and wear it to work!

Thrifting the Trends: Oversized Cowl Neck Sweater

We've already talked about how easy it is to thrift for the oversized sweater trend. It's so easy in fact, that you might find yourself getting carried away. We certainly have! So we have a few tips to help you stay grounded and not end up with a big woolly pile of buyer's remorse.

The key word to remember is quality. This is true with thrifting in general, but especially important when it comes to sweaters. You should inspect items carefully for stains, pulls, pilling and holes. It's easy to miss things even when you try them on, so look over each item carefully before bringing it to the register.

Of course if you're totally in love with a sweater, sometimes small imperfections can be corrected. We've found stains that are easily removed with baking soda or a spot treatment. If you're familiar with knitted fabrics, a small crochet hook and some patience can fix a pulled loop of yarn. Even some amount of pilling can be fixed with an old razor or battery-powered fabric shaver.

The cozy high-low hem sweater below is a size bigger than we usually wear and had some pilling under the arms. It was an easy fix with an old disposable razor. Good as new!

Thrifting the Trends: Oversized Open Knit Sweater

A lot of women avoid the oversized trend because they're afraid it will make them look fat or frumpy. This is especially a risk if you're not 5'11" and 120 lbs. For those who don't have model proportions (and frankly, even for those that do), there are is one major rule to keeping an oversized sweater flattering: pair it with something form-fitting. For example, skinny jeans, leggings, or a tight skirt.

This trick works for more than just big sweaters of course. There are a lot of loose, drapey looks in street style galleries and magazine spreads these days. Pairing a loose piece with something tight ensures that one part of your outfit shows your real size, which would otherwise be hidden.

Here are a trips and tricks for shopping this trend second-hand: If you're a small or a medium, in the women's section, shop the large and extra large sections. One of the great things about the oversized sweater trend is that it's perfectly in line with the unisex/androgynous trend. So if you're any size, be sure to check out the men's section. Not all men's sweaters will drape right, so be sure to try on before you buy.
